Celebrate Salmon and Community this October at Big Springs Ranch Wildlife Area

October 24 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free Family-Friendly Event Showcases Chinook Salmon and Habitat Restoration Efforts in Mt. Shasta

Montague, CA — October 24, 2026 — California Trout (CalTrout) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) in partnership with the Quartz Valley Indian Reservation, Karuk Tribe, Siskiyou Science Festival, Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center, and The Nature Conservancy, invite the public to a free community event at the Big Springs Ranch Wildlife Area on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

The day offers a rare opportunity to witness Chinook salmon spawning in the Shasta River while learning about ongoing habitat restoration efforts in the Mt. Shasta region. People protect what they love, and they love what they’ve experienced firsthand — so Big Springs Community Day gives visitors of all ages that direct, hands-on connection to the river, and the fish and wildlife that depend on it.

“This event is about connecting people to the river and the incredible wildlife that depend on it,” said Ada Fowler, Senior Project Manager at CalTrout. “By bringing the community together to experience salmon spawning firsthand, we’re celebrating both the resilience of these fish and the importance of protecting and restoring our shared natural heritage.”

Attendees can look forward to:

● 10:00am — Fish prints

● 10:30am — Geology of Shasta Valley, Professor Bill Hirt, College of Siskiyou, Biological and Physical Sciences, Emeritus

● 11:30am — Fish dissection

● 12:15pm — Salmon life cycle & data, presented by Kurt Bainbridge, Senior Environmental Scientist, Specialist, CDFW

● 1:00pm — Fish dissection

● 1:45pm — Nature journaling, with Kayla Marie Figard, Mt. Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center

Plus guided salmon viewing along the Shasta River during spawning season and opportunities to learn about the cultural and ecological significance of salmon.

The event is free and open to the public. Families, neighbors, and community members of all ages are encouraged to attend.
