Our funding policies reflect our awareness that increasing trust in the news requires transparency.
We are a nonprofit news service, funded by individuals and organizations through monthly gifts, grants and sponsorships.
In 2022 our funding came from:

Funding Policies:
We follow the Institute of Nonprofit News best practices for ethical and transparent funding policies in order to safeguard the independence of our news and increase trust with our community.
- We avoid accepting charitable donations from anonymous sources and government entities.
- We avoid donations deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
- We accept public donations from elected officials that are no larger the value of a typical monthly newspaper subscription.
- We do not allow donations to influence the editorial independence of our news.
- Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse any of our donors or their products, services or opinions.
- We publicly document all revenue sources of more than $5,000 a year.

Shasta Scout is a project of the North State Community Journalism Project, a California nonprofit that’s still pending tax-exempt status. In order to provide a tax exempt status for our donors, we receive donations through the Institute of Nonprofit News.
