Nevin Kallepalli: California Local News Fellow

I’m Nevin Kallepalli. I’m joining Shasta Scout as a part of UC Berkeley’s California Local News Fellowship. This program places early career reporters in underserved newsrooms across the state. I’m a recent graduate of Columbia University, where I received a M.S. in Journalism.
I was raised in West Texas and lived in Los Angeles and New York City before moving to the Northstate. I’ve always been keen on understanding faith communities, and have a particular interest in how religion informs people’s politics. My past reporting and research has focused on religious nationalism in Israel and India–and by proxy, the occupations of Palestine and Kashmir respectively. My writing has appeared in The Nation, The Baffler, and New York Magazine.
Here in Shasta County, I’ll be delving into local reporting. However, my intention remains the same. I hope to understand the concerns of all the County’s religious communities– across the political and denominational spectrum, as well as the area’s Indigenous, Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, and Jewish communities.
