On View Now: Remembrance Banners
Until November 16, you can see the exhibition, Remembrance Banners, on display at Old City Hall in Downtown Redding.

The Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) presents the exhibition Remembrance Banners, which features eulogistic banners that honor victims of hate crimes, police brutality, and other forms of gun violence. These banners are part of a larger project that honors the legacies of those who have been murderedโparticularly victims of hate crimes, police brutality, and other forms of gun violence.
The SJSA is an educational organization that uses textile arts to educate and empower the learners they work with. The purpose of the exhibition is to teach the public about the lasting effects these forms of violence have on vulnerable communities, while showing solidarity with those who have passed.
Some of those depicted and honored through the banners are Philando Castile, the 32-year old father murdered by a Minnesota police officer; Fifty Bandz, a Black trans woman killed in Baton Rouge; Gina Xiong, the victim of a triple homicide in Stockton.ย
Volunteers can participate in the project by creating a banner of their own. In the process, SJSA says, participants will educate themselves about social injustice, and understand the victims beyond the circumstances of their deaths.
