Today, the Shasta County Office of Education announced a vacancy on the Shasta County Board of Education for Area 1. A spokesperson for SCOE confirmed for Shasta Scout that board member Robert Brown, who represented schools in the Redding area, has resigned.

A letter anouncing the resignation sent by Brown to SCOE Board President Michael Orlicky was dated March 13. In it, Brown cited “significant health concerns” and said the resignation was effective immediately.

Brown has served on SCOE’s board since 2018. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

Any registered voter that lives in the elementary school districts of Enterprise, Grant, Redding, or Shasta Union can apply to be appointed to fill the rest of Brown’s term, which ends on Dec. 11 of this year. The only voters excluded from applying, pursuant to California Education Code, would be the county superintendent of schools or their employees, or any employee of a school district within the jurisdiction of SCOE. Applications are due April 22, and can be obtained by contacting SCOE at superintendentoffice@shastacoe.org or by calling (530) 225-0227. Candidates will be interviewed at a special public board meeting on May 6, 2026.

The appointment to fill Brown’s vacancy is likely to mark only a minor shift in the breakdown of votes among the seven-person board. Despite a highly politicized race for four open SCOE seats in 2024, a review of 2025 meetings during which all members were present showed the group often votes unanimously. Only occasionally have issues split three-four, meaning that one person’s vote would determine the outcome of a decision.

3.25.2026 1:45. p.m.: We have updated the story to correct the date when Brown began serving on the SCOE board.
