Close to 35,000 ballots remain to be processed in Shasta. New vote totals are expected today

Combined with the number of ballots already processed, the uncounted ballot estimate indicates an overall turnout of about 58,000 registered voters in this election. All ballots must be initially processed by end of day June 8, election official Clint Curtis said, to meet a June 11 state deadline.

About 35,000 ballots remain to be processed in Shasta. That’s according to Shasta County’s Registrar of Voters, Clint Curtis, who said the number was reported to the state last night, June 3.

Combined with the number of ballots reported as having been processed on Election Day, almost 23,000, that puts Shasta’s estimated voter turnout at around 58,000, or 50% for the June election. Curtis emphasized that the unprocessed ballot number estimate is just that, a best guess.

Last fall, that guess was off by more than ten thousand. Voter turnout for last November’s election eventually landed at about 65,000 or 56% of overall registered voters.

Curtis and his staff are racing an accelerated deadline of June 11 to certify votes cast for the Congressional District 1 election to fill the late Doug LaMalfa’s congressional seat. To meet that deadline, Curtis hopes to finalize all ballot processing by end of day Monday, June 8. That will give time for him to contact voters who need to correct, or cure, their ballot before the final deadline for submission to the state. The deadline to certify the vote for all other races on the ballot is July 2, allowing more time for voters to make any needed corrections to ballots that would impact vote totals for other races, Curtis confirmed.

Today, at the elections office on Market Street, a number of short-term temporary staffers were processing ballots, including major Measure B donor, Ronnean Lund and one of the five central proponents behind the measure, Deirdre Holliday.

No new vote totals have been released since the early morning of June 3. New results are expected to be released at 6 p.m.

  1. I’m curious. Just how is Measure B supposed to speed up ballot counting?

  2. The remaining count seems to prove the point of speed and accuracy of machine voting vs the potential monkey business of hand counts.

  3. Just out of curiosity, did that mischievous electrical panel that couldn’t be fixed for over a year go out again Wednesday or Thursday? Inquiring minds want to know.

  4. Buried at the end of the story is the news that a major doner to the Measure B campaign and one of the central proponents of Measure B are processing ballots for Measure B. What could go wrong?

  5. Maybe the Measure B folks will have a better idea of why hand counting is a fool’s errand while they are helping with this ballot handling, as long as there continues to be observers keeping them honest.

    Thank you Shasta Scout.

  6. Nothing says “precision” like a sticky note.

    • Just like nothing says clown like Clint Curtis.
