On January 1, around 6 pm, two unnamed Shasta County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man after responding to a call at a Redding residence.

The victim, identified as 52-year-old William Clark Littlefield, was shot outside of a residence on Bob’s Mountain Road. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Littlefield was under the influence of narcotics and had been “threatening to blow up a vehicle and harm himself.”  A press release notes that his elderly parents met deputies on scene, but did not specify who called the police or whether the home was where Littlefield or his parents resided.

Law enforcement’s brief account of the incident states that Littlefield “forced a violent confrontation” that “forced” the officers to “discharge their duty weapons.” The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office did not indicate whether Littlefield was armed or cite any details about the specific threat to officer safety that necessitated his killing. He was pronounced dead by medical personnel shortly after, law enforcement says.

Shasta County’s Officer-Involved Critical Incident Response Team (OICIRT) is investigating the incident. The two deputies who were involved have been placed on administrative leave, as per “standard protocol” used when police officers critically injure or kill people in the course of their work.

The 185-word press release was posted to social media and concluded with a statement that no further details would be released at this time.

While the shooting occurred at a Redding address, Public Information Officer Tim Mapes confirmed for Shasta Scout that the area where deputies killed Littlefield lies within Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction.”
