Gov. Gavin Newsom has set a date for the special election to fill the seat for Congressional District 1, the position held by late Rep. Doug LaMalfa, who died unexpectedly earlier this month.

The special election has been set for Aug. 4. Whoever is elected will fill the remainder of LaMalfa’s term, which goes until the end of this year. California Assemblyman James Gallagher recently announced that he’s running for the late congressman’s seat with the support of LaMalfa’s wife. He was projected to emerge as a frontrunner for the role prior to his announcement.

A primary for the special election is scheduled to occur on June 2, coinciding with the statewide primary for the November midterm election. If no individual candidate secures more than 50% of the vote for the congressional seat, then the special general election will proceed in August.

That would allow the razor-thin margin between Republicans and Democrats in the House to continue well into the summer. The date Newsom picked for the special election was the last possible day he could choose under state law.

  1. Using your CA gas prices as a Trump measuring stick is laughable…. and grocery prices have been going up since before 2023. In terms of debilitating inflation, draw a straight line for your health insurance premium increases directly to Mr Obama. That is the runaway train which is choking the self employed. You ask how Trump is kicking butt for me? I told you, he is the bombastic reaction to the woke shaming country people (anglos specifically). MAGA is a vibe that existed before Trump and will continue after he returns to NY politics. It’s branding, comparable to those African-American vs BLM. We tolerate it because it raises some sacrine awareness.

    • While much of Shastalaban is still asleep, frankly, America’s getting WOKE! A CNN/SSRS poll from a few days ago found that the majority disapprove of Trump’s handling of every major issue facing voters. Trump’s approval rating is underwater across the board, with 58 percent of adult respondents saying they view his return to office as a “failure.” His disasters include healthcare policy (63 percent disapprove), immigration (58 percent disapprove, and foreign affairs (60 percent disapprove), with only 39 percent approving of Trump’s handling of the economy. A 55% majority say that Trump’s policies have worsened economic conditions in the country, with only 32% saying they’ve made an improvement.

But that’s only part of the story. Trump is seen as a fascist by many, who said, “Hitler did some good things”.

Fascist Label: An October 2024 ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 49% of American registered voters consider Trump to be a “fascist.” The majority of Americans (54%) think Trump views Hitler positively in some way. Only 20% of Americans believe Trump views Hitler as a “completely bad person”.

A few months ago, PRRI Poll respondents said President Trump is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy,” up from 52% in March 2025. And only about 17% of Americans support U.S. efforts to acquire Greenland. A large majority say using military force to take it would be a bad idea (71% vs. 4%). Two-thirds are concerned that a Greenland push would hurt U.S. ties with NATO allies.

In closing, Gallagher is a short-timer trumper who will warm up the chair for Mike McGuire. And here in Shastalaban, we’ll be welcoming Congressperson Jerod Huffman!

      • I would expect nothing else from a CNN pol. And what a ridiculous set of questions. Cris accuses Trump of being akin to Hitler. Like the Nowains, he has no historical foundation beyond last week’s supervisor meeting. The only stat that matters is that Americans overwhelmingly selected Trump as president. In terms of Greenland–it’s all posturing. When you run a business that involves negotiations you have to come out with a show of force and then accept less. Most liberals don’t have that kind of work life experience and get worked up over each twist and turn.

  2. The governor’s decision was a clever tactical move, but it leaves the current District 1 voters without a voice in Congress for too long. I’m not happy with that situation.

  3. There’s a stat for everything and everyone if you look hard enough, Cris. Trump is kicking butt and I’m all for it. Is he a creepy brat? Of course. Newsom too. It’s politics. I just like that white people don’t have to pretend to feel guilty all the time with this president, so he’s useful to me. Gallagher’s secession map needs to grab way more coastline.

    • Creepy brats are arguably tolerable.

Narcissistic, habitually lying, morally bankrupt, reckless, almost magically delusional morons are not.

      • You could be referring to Gavin just as easily as Trump. You do see that, yes?

    • My groceries and gas are only more expensive since late 2023. Tell me how and why Trump is “kicking butt”? All I see is more tax taken out of my paycheck to the feds, for things that mean nothing to me and my life.

  4. “The date Newsom picked for the special election was the last possible day he could choose under state law.”

Tells you what Newsom thinks of Audrey Denney’s chances…

    • Nah. It just places an emphasis on preserving the status quo, which favors the Democrats and is a sure thing. Denney will still be favored to win.

  5. Ca. Assembly Person Gallagher, who has the blessing of Mrs. LaMalfa and is the darling of Shasta County Supervisors Crey, Kelstorm, and Harmon, stands a good chance of winning LaMalfa’s seat on June 04, 2026, but it’s short-lived. In 2024, MAGA Trump carried Congressional District 1 by 61%, and Gallagher not only endorses North State secession from California but, like LaMalfa was, he has a well-documented history of being a strong supporter of Trump.
However, Gallagher might be washed up with a Blue Wave. With 65% of Americans stating Trump is not someone they are proud to have as president, 61% disapproving of both Trump’s job performance and handling of the economy (CNN/SSRS, Jan. 15), and with Prop 50 redistricting, MAGA secessionist–pro-Trump Gallagher might be a short-termer.
I’ll wager a veggie burger that come November 05, 2026Senator Mike McGuire will take Congressional District 1 from Gallagher, and US Congressional Representative Jared Huffman will be Shasta County’s Congressperson! Remember, voting is the mark of a true patriot!
