🌳 Redding Riverfront Specific Plan Meeting – August 14

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

On Monday, Michelle attended the 5:30 p.m. presentation by City contractor MIG, the design firm hired to update the Riverfront Specific Plan for the City of Redding. A representative of MIG gave a brief presentation about the current Specific Plan update process before listening to about an hour and a half of public comments. Many of the comments centered around concerns about existing and future traffic issues in the area and the environmental impact of any further development, and ideas about business and attractions that some meeting attendees want to see in Redding. There were options to leave comments on poster boards around the room, and a MIG staff member was taking notes on suggestions given by the public. MIG says that the public comments will eventually be published on reddingriverfront.org.

A reminder that the City selected MIG to lead the project along with Populous, the architectural design firm that originally gave the City an unsolicited proposal last year. Initially, Populous proposed that the City declare some of the Riverfront property as “Surplus” property, opening the door for it to be sold or leased long-term. After public pushback, the City Council opted to plan for an update of the Specific Plan before considering any development proposals. Populous did not appear to be present at the community engagement meeting.

A meeting earlier in the day at 2:00 p.m. drew a crowd of about 100 people, with the 5:30 p.m. meeting containing about 50-75. Shasta Scout will keep you updated on future options for giving input on the plan as it develops.
