📝 Shasta County Board of Supervisors, August 29, 2023
Board Chair Patrick Jones started the meeting with new rules for community members in attendance. Those rules included Jones only giving one warning before asking attendees he considers disruptive to leave and not return. Christian Gardinier, a frequent commenter at BOS meetings, was warned once for making comments from the audience and was then asked to leave by Chair Jones later on in the meeting after what Jones considered a second offense. When Mr. Gardinier refused to leave, Chair Jones called a recess and asked for the room to be cleared. Both Mr. Gardinier and members of the press who were filming the events refused to leave. Ultimately Mr. Gardinier left the room, the meeting continued, and Mr. Gardinier was allowed to return. Read more about these events in Scout’s full story on the incident, which includes video.
The Board also held much discussion around further development planning in Palo Cedro. Community members spoke both for and against creating a community advisory group and allowing the county to perform an official community survey to inform the board’s decisions about what should be allowed to be developed in the area and how. Upon Supervisor Crye’s suggestion, the board ultimately voted to have Supervisor Mary Rickert and Supervisor Chris Kelstrom sit out in front of the Holiday Market in Palo Cedro for six hours on an undetermined date to hear from the community. It is unclear how community input will be collected and analyzed from these encounters. At the time of the decision, no one had spoken to Holiday Market about holding this event at the store.
