‘If you are not camera shy’: New Shasta election official issues call for staffers, poll workers and volunteers

Clint Curtis is calling on community members to apply for roles as temporary workers, volunteer poll workers and observers to help facilitate new election processes.

Shasta’s newly appointed election official Clint Curtis says he’s looking for more temporary employees, volunteers, poll workers and observers to help administrate the election process. The next scheduled local election will be held in June 2026.

In a press release today, Curtis wrote about an increased need for election workers to accommodate the new processes that he’s putting in place.

Implying that past election officials have not been inclusive to the public, Curtis encouraged individuals to apply to work or volunteer again even if they have previously been “denied.” But the invitation comes with one big caveat: Don’t apply as a staffer, poll worker or observer if you don’t want to be filmed because Curtis plans to livestream “every process that we can legally show.”

If community members “are not camera shy,” he said, and want to help facilitate the “best election in the country,” then they should reach out to the Elections Office for more information.

A spokesperson for the California Secretary of State’s Office told Shasta Scout last month that when it comes to both utilizing volunteers and filming election processes, care must be taken to ensure voter privacy and prevent voter intimidation.

The press release is Curtis’ first official public statement since being appointed in April. He was living in Florida and working for a public defender’s office in upstate New York when he was chosen as Shasta’s new Registrar of Voters by a majority of the county board earlier this year. Curtis has never run an election before.

His statement today included only one specific change to election processes that he intends to implement. The use of electronic poll pads to check voters in at polling places is being discontinued. County elections will instead use paper poll books instead, which are a legal alternative to the use of certified electronic polling pads.

Anyone interested in playing a role as a temporary staffer, poll worker or observer you can contact the Election Office at 530-225-5213.

  1. I have volunteered as an election worker for years, most of the time using paper sign-ins. I think that if we require voter IDENTIFICATION, it would be fine.

    • You mean the identification of being on the voter registration list?

  2. Gee, I wonder who’s going to volunteer now? I’ve volunteered the last few elections and can only imagine the mess that will ensue using paper poll pads. There won’t be enough time in the voting day in many precincts to get everyone through. And we can’t even be certain that his new election plans will be legal! How many times have we seen this before – someone with no knowledge of the situation making the rules and processes for those doing the actual work – it is never an improvement.

  3. If he’s asking for volunteers, how many batshit crazy morons like Rich Gallardo are going to show up to “help” It’s bad enough Clint is going to rope countless county workers away from their offices to count and everything else, like Tom did for the last one

  4. If Shasta County reverts to the use of paper voter rosters, how will the County Clerk/Registrar of Voters determine whether a voter signing the paper roster did not cast a vote-by-mail ballot the day before to prevent voters from voting twice?

This choice will likely increase the number of provisional ballots the County has to process. See California Elections Code section 3015.

  5. Gee, having problems finding volunteers? Wonder why? And, going to paper poll pads instead of electronic pads? How much longer will that take? I’m seeing unhappy voters (and volunteers) ahead.

  6. The State will no doubt try and alter or hamstring the efforts. Hence, the need for a solid law degree

    • Hopefully he’s not giving legal interpretations of California election code, or making decisions based on legal analysis of California statutes, or acting in a way that substitutes for legal counsel. That would be considered engaging in the unauthorized practice of law and he should be removed:

  7. This is written to sound more transparent. But I recall that CA Elections Board had Shasta County under watch for election concerns. Is that correct, and will they be informed of the ‘changes’ that this out-of-state county official will implement?

Its concerning because claims of ‘election fraud’ throughout the US have been debunked after every investigation, and court cases until finally appeals had to be thrown out. Our elections worked just perfectly… until one party of gov’t decided they didn’t like losing. And kept trying to undermine them with these claims.
