Shasta County’s Public Works director is retiring.

Troy Bartolomei has served Shasta County for 35 years, according to a letter to county officials on Feb. 2 announcing his retirement. He’s been the director of Public Works for a little over two years.

Bartolomei started his career at the county as a junior engineer in 1991. He’s held various positions since, including deputy director of Public Works – Engineering, assistant Public Works director and interim Public Works director.

In his letter, he said he has associated with several public works departments throughout the state and feels Shasta has the best one, as the department is often asked for advice and has a “team atmosphere.”

Bartolomei said that in his retirement, he plans to spend more time with his family, including his grandchildren, as well as travel, fish, coach football and embrace “all that retirement has to offer.”

“It has been a great pleasure to serve the citizens of Shasta County over these past decades,” Bartolomei wrote. “It is a great place to live. I will miss the people, challenges and rewards of the job. Likewise, I am looking forward to the next exciting stage in my life.”

Bartolomei’s retirement begins May 2. He said in his letter sent last week that he wanted to provide the county with ample time to prepare for his retirement. He also mentioned that he encourages the county to hire the next Public Works director from within current department staff.

A discussion about recruitment for the position is listed on tomorrow’s closed session agenda for the Shasta Board of Supervisors.
