The Redding City Council has chosen William Tarbox, the director of the Department of Public Works in Concord, as the next city manager.

Mayor Mike Littau said the decision comes after careful consideration and difficult choices, emphasizing that Tarbox “will bring a fresh perspective to the city,” because he’s worked with multiple other cities before, including San Francisco and Benicia.

“We feel confident with who was selected,” Littau told Shasta Scout on Tuesday. “We can’t wait to get to work. There’s urgent issues that need to be looked at.”

If Tarbox passes his background check, he will start the position in early 2026. Former Assistant City Manager Steve Bade is currently holding the interim position after former City Manager Barry Tippin retired in October. Bade had also applied for the job.

Council members met several times in closed session meetings over the past two months to decide who the next city manager would be. Littau told Shasta Scout that around 50-60 people applied for the position, and that the council worked to identify the person most capable of leading the city through difficult situations, such as challenges surrounding the city’s budget.

According to a press release about Tarbox’s hiring, he has “demonstrated a consistent ability to navigate complex municipal operations, build relationships, and lead with integrity” and has more than two decades of leadership experience.

  1. Looks like the city of Redding will be getting a lazy little man because he didn’t do anything in Concord. He was always out of the office and didn’t have a clue about how to run a Public Works department. He is only interested in the money because he can’t afford to buy a house in this area. He will try and get the top of the salary when he isn’t even remotely qualified to be a City Manager. Good riddance!
