Shasta County Election Results: Gateway Unified School District and Shasta Fire Protection District
Results from elections night are in. Final certified election results are still pending.

November 8, 1:15: We have updated this article to remove a citation regarding how many are eligible to vote in the Gateway District.
Two main issues were decided by voters in the Shasta County November 7 election: who will sit in the fifth board seat for Gateway Unified School District and whether a special Fire Protection District will be formed.
Only 17% of the 9,470 eligible registered voters turned out to vote during this election.
With the numbers from election night in, we are reporting preliminary election results. The final results will not be official until approximately November 22.
Gateway Unified School District
With 1,370 votes having been counted, Casey Bowden holds a commanding lead over Camille King in a tiny but hotly contested local school board election.
As of November 7, at 10 pm, Bowden was winning with a margin of 216 votes more than King has received. This is not a final result.
Votes counted on election night include vote-by-mail ballots dropped off either before or during election day and and all votes cast in the precincts on election day.

Shasta Fire Protection District: Measure A, Measure B, and Director
Voters also decided whether to create a new special district for fire protection in the historic community of Shasta, how to fund that district, and who will sit on the new district’s board.
Measure A was to decide whether the new district would be formed. Less than 250 people voted on this topic with 92% of them voting to form the new fire district passing the measure which required a vote of at least 50%.
Measure B was to determine funding for the fire protection district if Measure A passed. With almost 90% of the vote, Measure B has met the two-thirds of voters threshold needed to fund the district. According to reporting from the Record Searchlight, the Measure will result in approximately $25,000 in annual revenue for the new district.
Voters were also asked to choose three people to serve as directors for the newly formed fire protection district. Only three people qualified for the ballot so all three will become directors of the new fire district. They include Cynthia MacDonald, Susan Weale and Rusty Swayne. The three received similar amounts of votes.

I live in Gateway School district and never received a ballot to vote. I guess it was only for people with students? I live in Lakehead so maybe our votes didn’t count for this vote.
The election only involved voters in what is known as Gateway’s “Area 2”. The new board member will represent Area 2.
The results of the Gateway School District Board of Trustees election is a harbinger of what’s to come on March 5, 2024 when Supervisor Kevin Crye, District 1, will be recalled. The gang who brings candidates to the forefront for seats like this will be facing a new electorate. Folks are simply fed up with the tearing down of local Democracy. If you haven’t registered to vote, you might want to do such; if you’ve moved or want to change registration, now’s the time to do it.
Congrats to Casey Bowden; he’ll make sure common sense decisions will be the norm at Gateway.
