The Ironman 70.3 Northern California has passed, but it was a moment in Redding’s history to commemorate for athletes, their supporters and the Redding community.

The Ironman 70.3 Northern California triathlon is officially complete. It was an event marked by celebrating athletes, enthusiastic supporters and volunteers and cooler-than-average temperatures.
The race started a little after 6 a.m. on Aug. 16 with a 1.2-mile swim at Whiskeytown Lake.

After getting out of the water, athletes ran across a platform to a barricaded area with bikes, where they prepared for the biking portion of the race.

The 56-mile bike course traveled throughout various parts of Shasta County, including near the city of Shasta Lake and the Palo Cedro area.

Hundreds of volunteers were scattered throughout the race course to provide aid to athletes, including ice, water and fruit.

After athletes finished biking, they dismounted for a 13.1-mile run, or a half marathon.

The run was held mainly along the Sacramento River and Arboretum Loop Trails. The course also crossed the Sundial Bridge twice, a unique part of the course for many runners who aren’t from the area.

The top male finisher of the race was Jason West, who completed the triathlon in three hours and 39 minutes. The top female finisher was Grace Alexander, who finished in four hours and 17 minutes.

Overall, more than 1,700 athletes were registered to compete in the race. The Ironman is contracted to be held in Redding again for the next two years.
