Shasta HHSA will close its California Street eligibility services office
The office has been used by those seeking eligibility for CalFresh, CalWORKS and Medi-Cal. HHSA said the closure is due to a move, but did not announce when or where an eligibility office will reopen.
Shasta County’s Office of Eligibility and Employment Training services, located at 1400 California St. in Redding, will close permanently Wednesday, Sept. 23.
The office is used mostly by community members seeking to determine their eligibility for a variety of state-mandated programs that serve low-income individuals, Shasta County’s Health and Human Service’s Agency said by press release today. Those programs include CalFresh, which provides monthly money for groceries, CalWORKS, which provides job training and financial assistance to families with children, and Medi-Cal.
The closure is due to a planned relocation, the agency said. But so far HHSA has not provided a date when an office providing the same designated services will open, or a location where they’ll be provided. This is the third Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency location serving economic mobility clients to close in recent years, the agency confirmed today.
The designated phone number for those seeking help with eligibility services will also be turned off after Wednesday when the office closes, HHSA said, noting that clients seeking eligibility can still get help by calling HHSA’s Customer Service Center line at (877) 652-0731 or by going online at BenefitsCal.com.
Amidst the office move, HHSA said it will continue to serve eligibility clients at other agency offices Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those sites are listed below.

There is a big move happening to relocate staff to the 2600 Park Marina office where Admin and some of Dept of Child Support Services are located.
If I were a client I would go to another office for the next couple of weeks while staff get relocated and settled in.
Typical County! Closing the building, leaving the clients confused on who goes where for services. That building has been too small for DECADES! So why the big hurry now. Why not do all of this the correct way. I can see mail going missing, appointments being missed, and clients being negatively impacted dcue to confusion.
My advice to clients…. If your case should have negative action being taken and you feel the chaos is at fault…. File a Fair Hearing!
No surprise here. Make eligibility harder, defund then close the office to ensure fewer benefits to eligible people. We need to find money for the war somewhere.
HHSA is consolidating locations to reduce cost and provide more grant dollars for program services. I’m sorry that Annalise didn’t look further into this.
Rhonda: yes we’ve already reported several times on the ongoing consolidation as an effort to cut costs. Whether more services will be provided remains to be documented. This particular story was an effort to inform those who are seeking services.
