After resignation of board member Omana Weeks, Anderson Union High School District seeks applicants
It is unclear why Weeks, whose resignation took effect on July 1, left the position. The board will fill the vacancy through a provisional appointment, with applications due Aug. 12.
The Anderson Union High School District Board of Trustees is accepting applications to fill a vacant Area 3 board seat following the resignation of President Tara “Omana” Weeks.
Weeks, a bookkeeper who ran unopposed for the position in 2024, was appointed board president in May. The district did not immediately respond to a request for comment on why Weeks resigned.
Her resignation took effect July 1, creating a vacancy that the board plans to fill through a provisional appointment rather than a special election. Under California law, the board has 60 days from the date of the vacancy to either appoint a replacement or call an election.
The appointed trustee will serve the remainder of the term, which expires in December 2028. Trustee positions for areas 1, 2 and 4 — currently held by Staci Adams, Joe Gibson and Jackie LaBarbera — are up for election this fall. Area 5 Trustee Julia Rinauro, who was appointed board president after Weeks’ resignation, will complete her term in 2028.
The vacancy comes amid a prolonged period of contentious governance for AUHSD. In recent years, the board has been at the center of public debates over LaBarbera’s multiple school board seats, the district’s former Community Schools grant, and a parental notification policy that requires schools to notify parents if a student requests to use a different name or pronouns. The district sued the state in defense of the policy, which appears to violate California’s SAFETY act.
Applications for the board’s vacant seat are due by 3 p.m. on Aug. 12. Candidates must reside in AUHSD Trustee Area 3, and may not hold any conflicting positions or political offices. The board plans to review applications and interview finalists during its regular meeting on Aug. 19, when trustees are expected to make the appointment in open session.
Area 3 residents interested in serving on the board can complete an application through the AUHSD site. Candidates interested in running for one of the three other board seats up for election this fall should file by Aug 7 to get their name on the ballot.
